HBO Max Scores Exclusive ‘Doctor Who’ Streaming Rights

HBO Max has secured streaming rights to BBC sci-fi thriller Doctor Who.

All 11 seasons—including Jodie Whittaker’s premiere—will be available on the new WarnerMedia platform at launch in spring 2020.

As part of a long-term deal, the streamer will also be the exclusive U.S. home for future seasons after they air on BBC America.

Doctor Who is one of television’s all-time, most beloved series, on both sides of the pond, and we are happy to be the exclusive streaming stewards for this BBC gem,” Chief Content Officer Kevin Reilly said in a statement.

Just like the TARDIS, HBO Max is bigger on the inside.

As its name implies, the upcoming video-on-demand service draws content from HBO, as well as other WarnerMedia Entertainment Networks.

Beyond Game of Thrones and Big Little Lies, you’ll find programming from Adult Swim, Boomerang, CNN, Cartoon Network, The CW, Crunchyroll, DC Entertainment, Looney Tunes, New Line Cinema, Rooster Teeth, TBS, TNT, truTV, Turner Classic Movies, and Warner Bros.

And, now, BBC Studios.

“The TARDIS is about to welcome a whole new slew of fans coming to the show through this deal with HBO Max,” Nigel Gaines, interim president of BBC Studios–Americas, said.

“Our audience is incredibly dedicated and engaged,” Global Franchise Director Sally de St. Croix added, “and we can’t wait to work with HBO Max to tell our stories from across all of time and space.”

In addition to everyone’s favorite Time Lord, HBO Max has licensed 700 episodes featuring other iconic BBC characters:

  • The Office: The original British television mockumentary, created, written, and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. Deal includes two seasons and two specials.
  • Top Gear: Car show featuring several seasons with original hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, as well as recent casts including Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris, Paddy McGuinness, and Freddie Flintoff. Deal includes multiple seasons.
  • Luther: British crime drama starring Idris Elba as a detective consumed by the crimes he investigates. Deal includes all five seasons.
  • The Honorable Woman: Nine-part mini-series featuring Maggie Gyllenhaal, created, written, and directed by Hugo Blick.

The deal also includes new titles Pure, Trigonometry, Stath Lets Flats, Home, and Ghosts, available exclusively to HBO Max next year.

Greg Berlanti (helmer of The CW’s Arrowverse) and Reese Witherspoon, meanwhile, are both producing original films for the service.

But it’s HBO Max’s nostalgia factor—with the entire back catalog of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Friends—that will likely appeal to a certain segment of consumers.

Netflix infamously paid $100 million to keep Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Monica, Joey, and Phoebe on its service in 2019. But that deal ends once HBO Max launches in the spring.
